MSE has 9 employees working across several areas of expertise:

  • Drafting and design (drafter, designer): From preliminary designs to execution plans, MSE produces customized project drawings and brings its full technical expertise to the table.
  • Quantitative cost estimating for all trades: Based on execution plans, MSE prepares detailed quantity takeoffs and customized contracts, using pre-negotiated purchasing conditions. All that remains is to issue the purchase orders directly to suppliers and contractors.
  • Reinforced concrete design in compliance with current seismic standards.
  • Project management (construction supervision): Coordinating the execution of each stage of the construction process.
  • Thermal regulation calculations in line with RE2020 (French carbon regulation), as well as ventilation (HVAC) studies

The Context

As part of the transition to RE2020 (French regulation), the engineering firm was looking for a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool capable of leveraging the quantity takeoffs generated with Attic+ for use in economic studies.

Pain points

As a specialist in single-family homes, MSE is required to deliver accurate studies as quickly as possible to meet the expectations of homebuilders. In this context, the main challenge for conducting LCAs was to automate the process by aligning it with data already calculated beforehand—particularly thermal studies and product quantities from the economic analysis.

MSE is a particularly interesting and inspiring case study of how a Construction Economist can integrate carbon considerations into traditional activities. With a clear ambition to create a seamless workflow between its various tools, Métré Sud-Est successfully achieved its carbon transition by:

  • Automating the production of regulatory LCAs using our bill of quantities import features from cost estimation software,

  • Configuring its macro-components to ensure the accuracy of its carbon results,

  • Leveraging all key features to quickly generate client-ready reports and export the LCA file in the official RE2020 format to ensure compliance.

Client Testimonial

“The LCA study takes 1.5 hours, 2 hours max depending on the complexity of the house, with accurate results as long as our labels are well defined. The component import feature is very efficient, and we really appreciate the automated PDF output as well as the generation of the mandatory LCA file. In the end, we no longer need to use a massive Excel spreadsheet!

The support team is very responsive and handles our requests very well.”

Expert Opinion

Benoît Lehnig, Head of Product

One of the most significant efforts in building LCA lies in collecting the building’s life cycle inventory and linking it to environmental data. When the life cycle inventory is already available in the client’s digital ecosystem—using a standardized format such as BIMetré and generated from a stable material library—it presents a fantastic opportunity to move toward fully automated LCAs with zero friction for the user.

The ability to define and store consistent, long-term associations in Vizcab between products from third-party software and their environmental data is the technological capability we have developed. Each interoperability we build between quantity-generating tools and Vizcab helps significantly reduce the time required to complete an LCA.
